Personal Profile

"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence." - Vince Lombardi

profile

I have always considered myself a tinkerer both personally and professionally. It certainly explains my affinity for metrics and data analysis at work and my pursuits of the quantified self and DIY/hacking at home. It also explains my passion for toiling over a keyboard, striving to string the right words together in the right order to convey the perfect thought, description or emotion. You may have heard of this form of tormented self-abuse referred to by its more common term...writing.

Some might label me a "perfectionist," but I believe that term has garnered a negative connotation. When I hear someone being referred to as a perfectionist, I get the impression that they have an almost supervillian focus on a very specific goal and they are indifferent to the collateral damage incurred to achieve that goal. I have no interest in leveling a scorched earth policy to save a few bucks at work or burning down the house to achieve a perfect crème brûlée at home. I'd rather build value that benefits everyone. At work that means the employees, the business, and the customers working together to achieve a sustainable product or service. At home that means my family, my friends, and myself finding happiness in the fragility that is time. Personally, I think that makes me a "pragmatic achiever."

Current & Recent Employment

The Northern Trust Company

Vice President / Chicago, IL / 2014 - Current

I am serving in a multi-faceted, consultant/project manager/editorial role at the Northern Trust. Currently, my efforts are centered on working with a cross-organizational team to generate content related to federal capital adequacy requirements.

CCH, a Wolters Kluwer Business

Senior Writer Analyst / Chicago, IL / 2003 - 2014

As a senior member of the editorial team, I was responsible for acquiring, enriching, creating, and presenting content for multiple customer segments and industries through a myriad of print, digital and social media publishing channels. In addition to generating and coordinating the creation of content, I was frequently consulted on the latest technology trends and the process to implement social media as a means to interact with our customer base.

I was also responsible for the design and implementation of internal technology solutions that not only generated internal efficiencies, but lead to an enhanced customer experience. These solutions led to time-to-market and overall quality improvements.

Formal Education

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." - William Butler Yeats

The John Marshall Law School

Juris Doctor - Graduated: 2002

LL.M (Taxation) - Graduated: 2003

In addition to learning about the law and the joys of suing my fellow man, my two biggest takeaways from John Marshall were converting critical thinking to concise, persuasive text and standing up in front of a skeptical audience and successfully making my case. These two skills have been immeasurable assets in all of my professional endeavors.

Illinois State University

Bachelors of Science (Finance) - Graduated: 1999

I have fond memories of my alma matter in Normal, Illinois. At ISU, I developed my very first website in 1997 to post my rather sparse resume. Recently, while going through some old boxes, I unearthed a stored copy of the index file. Unfortunately, without a 3.5" floppy disk drive, I fear my "ugly duckling" will forever be lost to history.
